Once in Australia following successful completion of the Stage I – Desk Top Audit, overseas educated occupational therapists will be
required to
have their practice audited once they have secured paid employment, or self-employment, as an occupational therapist in Australia.

Practice Audit Policy Changes 08/03/2011
Approval of a practice audit may be backdated to the start for employment provide that it is received by OTC within two (2) weeks from the commencement date, approval will only be given from the date the application was received (previously 6 weeks).
Seeking feedback on the assessment of overseas-trained Occupational Therapists 22/02/2011
The Occupational Therapy Council (Australia & New Zealand) Inc (OTC) is reviewing the way that it assesses the qualifications and competency of overseas-trained occupational therapists for migration purposes. The aim of the review is to identify ways that the current assessment system can be improved, if necessary.

National Registration Scheme 22/06/2010
Occupational therapists in Australia will join the Commonwealth Government National Registration
and Accreditation Scheme in July 2012. The scheme, which commences in July 2010 for the 10
currently nationally registered professions, will ensure for the first time that all occupational
therapists in Australia are registered health professionals.
Transitional Review Arrangements for Applicants who have Commenced but not Completed the

The office of OTC has received a large number of enquires from overseas trained occupational
therapists who have migrated to Australia following a "suitable" Stage I Desk Top Application but
have failed to complete the Stage 2 Practice Audit requirement within the time allowed.

National Registration successful 10/09/2009
On 27 August 2009, the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council announced that
occupational therapy will be joining the Australian National Registration and Accreditation Scheme
from 1 July 2012.

National Registration & National Accreditation / Stage I Expiry Dates 10/11/2008
On the 3 October 2008 a joint submission from COTRB and OT Australia was forwarded to the Australian Health Workforce Principles
Committee to include the profession of occupational therapy in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
National Registration & Accreditation 9/07/2008
The Council of the Australian Governments (COAG) signed an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) for a National Registration and
Accreditation Scheme for the Health Professions, commencing on 1 July 2010.
English Language Proficiency 14/03/2008
The Committee have resolved to accept the OET, as well as the IELTS, as evidence of English language proficiency.

The Department of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs have developed a Skill Matching Database to assist Australian employers to identify prospective skilled employees from overseas.

At its meeting held on 20 February 2006 the Council adopted a policy regarding the registration of occupational therapists who are working in positions which are not identified as "occupational therapist".
